Biography / Résumé
As a youngster, Mr. Breitenbach fondly remembers both his parents performing in community theatre. His mother taught him to play mandolin and piano at an early age. Later he played lead guitar and sang in rock and jazz groups and won first place in a high school talent contest for performing songs he had written.
In college he studied architecture and fine arts, and before graduating, won a fellowship to study painting in Rome, Italy. He eventually made a career for himself publishing his artwork, and received particular notoriety for a painting titled Proverbidioms, a collection of common proverbs and clichés. This supported him as he experimented with other art forms, including the construction of a little fairytale castle where he lives and works.
In the late 80's Breitenbach began writing an illustrated fantasy novel titled Grumparar's the New Creatures; An Adventure and Field Guide, which he later self-published.
By the mid 90's he returned to writing music, and after seeing an imaginative new musical, a version of the Snow Queen by English playwright Adrian Mitchell, Breitenbach decided to turn his attention to musical theatre. "Theatre is perfect for me", he says, "It is all the arts put together‹all the arts I had been practicing for years: writing, music, lyrics, architecture, painting‹it's all there. I wanted to create new, highly imaginative and endearing stories. And I insisted on the highest quality music too, as most of the tunes released in recent years on Broadway seemed tired and mediocre to me."
Breitenbach's first musical, Hieronymus, is about his favorite artist, medieval fantasy painter Hieronymus Bosch, famous for his Garden of Earthly Delights triptych. The musical also contains a lot of personal autobiography. Breitenbach lends his own personal angst to the show‹the feeling that most everyone doesn't really get it, even those closest to him‹the passion, the joy, the pain‹the creation and reality of such.
