Welcome to Maverick Musicals & Plays!
Can
you believe I’ve been rattling on about musicals and plays to you for 25
years now? There’s still such a buzz about it all and the biggest is the
friendships we’ve formed with so many of our customers – starting with
Australian directors who were there in those early days when we began our
publishing with Man of Steel (who could have guessed it would go on to
become such a cult classic?) and a couple of theatre restaurant scripts. Our
range is vastly different these days, with scripts for various performance
genres covering all ages and the scripts and music available in many
mediums. Now all are marketed throughout the world but one thing never
changes – and that is the satisfaction of working and striving with you all
towards the same aim: the highest standard possible with amateur
productions!
Before I go on (doesn’t she….?) and whilst indulging in fond
thoughts as I rummage through my early publishing memories, I want to make
mention of someone special. I’ve known Tim Tuck, writer of the delightful
musical (amongst others) Conundrum, since the early days. Not only has it been a
pleasure to work with him to promote his work, his relationship with Maverick
Musicals & Plays goes further than you would know - and constantly – he’s also our most
talented webmaster and designer and is responsible for the fabulous new website
that you’ve all given a mighty thumbs up to. We call upon his creative powers
incessantly, this busy man, a teacher, writer and composer of musicals, director
of school and local theatre, computer whiz and all round good guy - we couldn’t
manage without him.
And if we’re talking indispensable, the unflappable Helen,
manager extraordinaire and she who knows every title, every character, every
plot, is well known to you all as the one who makes sure you receive your
scripts and licenses at speed. She’s also on the ball if you don’t book your
rights so don’t mess with her!
OK, I know I say this all the time but this year’s going to be
huge – we’ve released 11 new titles in response to the calibre of scripts
received. You’re History the musical from
the exciting new writing partnership of Tim Bain and Michael Patterson is going
to be performed over and over. A must to peruse – the resources are very
comprehensive, including the excellent DVD of Geelong Grammar School’s
production. (More details in the catalgue and on the website)
Michael Olsen’s whacky Last
Dance of the Plum Sisters could prove to be as popular as his top selling
Two Women & a Chair, along with our other 3 new release one act plays - all
great Festival plays – a comedy, The Rack
by frank annie author Louise Neilson and a lovely drama,
Perfect from Helen Wyngard, who has a
very strong following, with her Festival plays winning trophy after trophy for
their performers. Possibly the most interesting is
Boxing Day from new writer Bruce Olive,
who also penned the excellent ensemble senior teen (full length) play
Reality
Dreams.
I am delighted to be part of publishing perhaps the most amazing
plays I’ve read in all my time in publishing.
Mark Wheeller contacted
Maverick about the time we were due to finalise the publishing lists for 2005;
when we read his scripts, we knew we had to do whatever possible to delay our
deadlines and get them ready for this year’s releases! We agreed to publish 4 of
them immediately. His Reality Plays, already massively popular in the UK, are so
dramatic on the page that it’s exciting to think of the power these scripts will
unleash during performance. Suitable for both senior teens and adults these
scripts are also used as examination texts by teachers of senior students. The
scripts and rights are exclusive to Maverick in Australia and in New Zealand;
Too Much Punch For Judy has already toured New Zealand professionally to great
acclaim. Please take advantage of our free reading service and READ THESE FOUR
PLAYS! Even if you aren’t in performance mode, this style of playwriting will
make you sit up if you have any interest in quality script writing and feel
frustrated at the lack of seriously good writing for senior teens.
Anyway, as usual, heaps more detail and free perusal scripts on
our website – do pay the new titles a visit and contact me if you need further
info. Gail Denver, editor
