love to promote Australian composers and playwrights. We also love
promoting Australian theatrical companies and festivals that promote Australian
writers. So this page is our way of saying 'good on yer' and
giving those groups a little bit of extra promotion.

Macquarie Bank supports new playwrights!
Noosa Arts Theatre is
pleased to announce that they have received a welcome
sponsorship boost from Macquarie Bank, for their National
One-Act Playwriting Competition, doubling the prize money on
offer to the many emerging playwrights who enter the
competition each year from right across Australia.
Macquarie will sponsor the award for Best Play, to the value
of $2,500, thus increasing the total prize pool now offered
for the winning playwrights, to $5000.
The national competition, which attracts entries from all over
Australia, encourages and fosters new playwrights and has been
the launch pad for several very successful playwrights.
The competition offers a unique opportunity for playwrights,
for unlike many writing competitions, the 3 finalists get to
see their play come to life for the very first time on stage,
as part of Noosa Arts Theatre One-Act Play Festival and as
part of The Noosa Longweekend Festival. The Festival also
ecompasses a writers workshop.
Past winner and finalist Hugh O’Brien had this to say:
“In 2005, I was fortunate to win with my play
LOVE AND OTHER FLUSHES. As part of the prize, Maverick
Musicals published the play. That led to them publishing
another of my plays FARMER WILL SWAP COMBINE HARVESTER FOR
WIFE, a play about rural domestic violence. That play has
since toured New South Wales and also won the Queensland
Government Domestic Violence Prevention Award in 2008. All
this only happened because the Noosa One Act Playwriting
competition gave me my start in playwriting!”
Theatre patron and Australia’s most successful playwright
David Williamson, joins the reading panel, made up of 6
Sunshine Coast locals who have a wealth of experience in
theatre and playwriting. Mr Williamson will work with them in
selecting the final 3 plays from the final 5. His wealth of
experience is a great asset to the competition.
"The association of Macquarie Financial Services with both The
Noosa Longweekend Festival and the Noosa Arts Theatre One-Act
Playwriting Competition is a very exciting development in the
promotion of cultural activities in Noosa and underlines
Macquarie's involvement in this aspect of community life in
our shire”
said Simon Gamble of Macquarie Financial
Services, Noosa.
The 3 finalist plays, will be
performed in a two week season in early June 2010 at Noosa
Arts Theatre and again at The Noosa Longweekend Festival which
will showcase the Best Play and the Audience Choice winner
from the competition, as part of the Festival program. They
will be presented at the Noosa Arts Theatre on Saturday 26th
June.
“The development of another diverse and
interesting program for the Noosa Longweekend, including
events at the Noosa Arts Theatre, is well advanced and we are
most appreciative of support from the private sector without
which little of this would be possible."
Ian Mackellar – General Manager, The Noosa
Long Weekend Festival.
Winner of the Audience Choice Award is also a publishing
contract with Maverick Musicals & Plays, a long time supporter
of the competition.
